Reflections on Drupal Camp Chicago

Its been about a week and a half since Drupal Camp and I decided that it was about time that I put down some of my thoughts.  All-in-all it was a great experience.  The venue (The University of Chicago Law School) was classy, the provided meals were tasty, the people were friendly, and the sessions were interesting.  But more than any of those individual things, I am left with a sense of wonder about what an amazing community Drupal has developed around it.  People that are clearly passionate about what they do and love to share their knowledge.

It is often wondered how people can make any money by promoting and using free software.  But there are already quite a few businesses doing it and doing it well.  I think it is really about having the right philosophy that allows these businesses to not only succeed but to prosper greatly.  Some of the best sessions I listened to and participated in were about this very subject.  How do you run a business with Drupal at the center of it?  This is something that the Web Geeks For Hire have dedicated themselves to the task of answering and we have learned a lot along the way.  One thing that we have learned is that it is important not to forget about the community.  I try to visit Drupal.org at least once a day to see what new modules are being released and if anyone has responded to any items in my issue queue.  And although I am pretty sure I ask a lot more questions than I answer, I am pretty sure that I have helped some projects along the way by helping the developers and maintainers see their project from a different point of view.

One of the discussions we had at Drupal Camp was about finding a niché for your business.  Acquia is the Drupal enterprise company.  Lullabot is the Drupal training and support company.  Volacci is the Drupal SEO company (or so they say... I'd never heard of them before this weekend).  What will Web Geeks For Hire be?  Stay tuned to find out.
